Research & teaching

Curiosity,
with citations.

I study language, learning and the practical limits of what AI can tell us about people.

Academic research

A PhD in making
learning personal.

I earned my PhD at Ghent University (2018–2022), working at the intersection of natural language processing, educational data mining and personalised learning.

My research included language and mathematics learning, question difficulty, semantic representations and student performance. The larger question has stayed with me: how can technology adapt to a learner without mistaking a convenient metric for understanding?

Good metrics help. They don't tell the whole story.
What interests me

From models
to meaning.

Language

What does a text really communicate?

Readability, meaning, context, multilingual retrieval and what is lost between words and representations.

Learning

When is personalisation helpful?

Question difficulty, educational data, learner models and the difference between performance and understanding.

Evidence

How much can we trust the result?

Evaluation, uncertainty, interpretation and responsible use of language technology in real systems.

Reading trail

Selected reading.

A deliberately short selection. The dissertation and publication record contain the more complete academic history.

Teaching & sharing

Knowing something isn't the same as explaining it.

I've been a teaching assistant for statistical modelling, data mining and Bayesian statistics; mentored student work; and shared applied NLP with researchers, engineers and civic organisations. I enjoy the problem of helping someone form a useful mental model, not just remember a method.
